“I’VE SET GRAN-EBERL up in his room. I would have thought he’d be upset with his accommodations, but he seemed thrilled,” Zarah said. “Did the rogue say anything?”

“Not much. Turns out he wasn’t all bluster after all. He’s pretty tough. Ho’Scar tossed him in a cell and is working on the other one,” I said as I showered.

“Ho’Scar likes to make the torment last. I’ve seen people tortured for years before they expired. I’m still very upset at you, by the way.”

“I couldn’t trust the skeletons to stop them, and no one else was competent enough to rescue Eberl. So, I went myself.”

“You’re not fooling me. You wanted to feel the thrill of combat and punish them yourself. In that manner, you’re nothing like Orgun. He didn’t like to get his hands dirty. And you’re lucky they had a healing potion or Eberl would be dead.”

“I’m surprised you care so much about the old man. It seems to me you thought he wasn’t worth the hassle.”

“I don’t. I just don’t want you risking yourself, the dungeon, and me by flinging yourself into battle when you have disposable creatures for that very purpose.”

I could tell she was lying. The old coot had grown on her. Perhaps he reminded her of someone she traveled with when she performed in her past life. “I swear the next party that comes in will have to deal with the dungeon itself and not me. Fair enough?”

Zarah materialized a drum and began beating it slowly. “It’s more than just for your protection. Did you notice the surge in strength when you killed that fleeing man? That’s because you killed him yourself and took most of his power for your own. The dungeon received very little. Fortunately, we still have two left alive to wring magic from, but at the moment, we need to refuel the dungeon’s magic stores, not build a stronger master.”

I had noticed the influx of power upon the man’s death. I’d thought it was just the exhilaration of combat, but I knew I’d grown slightly stronger. I looked down at my well-muscled body, which had been sculpted from the constant sparring with Xagrim combined with Ho’Scar’s heavy meals. I felt...powerful.

After my shower, we traveled to the throne room. The blue glowing liquid in the Soul Sphere rippled slightly. I couldn’t tell if the amount had increased.

“There is slightly more in it now than this morning. If the rogues had advanced down a level or two and the dungeon had ended them, it would have grown probably five or ten percent,” Zarah said as she tapped the glass with a sharp, black fingernail.

“That much?” I felt a twinge of guilty regret at how the fight had turned out. Yet, we gained an outside agent in the process. One who could lead even more to their doom.

“Have you thought about who we should target first?” Zarah asked. I swear, it seemed she could read my mind at times.

“Quite a bit. I feel it is too
